Refocus is a
grassroots organisation which runs
participatory photography courses for
minority groups and marginalised people.
Refocus puts the camera into the hands
of the learners, giving them the power
to depict the realities of their lives,
both as individuals and as groups. We
aim to improve awareness of the plight
of others, create dialog in their
communities and globally, empower the
participant by building confidence, self
esteem and hope.
The workshops teach basic technical
skills whilst focusing on individual
photographic creativity. Specific goals
are outlined for the participant to
focus on; important issues are raised
through the discussion of images and the
depiction of realities; a safe space is
made for the participants to express
themselves, interact with others and
explore their identities.
The new photographers speak publicly
through images, symbols and metaphors.
They select and caption images that are
then exhibited locally for the immediate
community and internationally on the
internet enabling their voices to travel
further.
We believe in the power of photography
as an alternative route to social
change. The photographs transmit values
and understanding that belong to the
persons involved and are not imposed by
an outside view of their situation.
It is part of Refocus' vision that
through this empowerment, participants
will gain a positive self-image while
rising above stigmas, improving their
social and cultural conditions.
